I got this set of Koa a while back and it was described as Pomelle Koa. Is that accurate? What does the "Pomelle" means? I think it is an awesome set of wood, I just want to know what I am talking about if I ever have to describe it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Neil ![]() |

Hi Neil, "Pomelle" means "dappled" en francais. What you have there is just "Koa" IMO. I see no dappling, although there is a bit of flame on the sides. Your set will make a fine looking guitar for sure, but I would just call it "figured Koa" if I were you. This is what pomelle should look like (these are pomelle sapelle from Africa): ![]() ![]() I have some that's even more pronouced pomelle figure than these. Cheers, Dave F. |

Lots going on there, I would call it a candidate for lamination, neither the back or sides look overly stable. With that in mind you call call it Jim Carey.. ![]() Cheers Kim |

Personally, I would call it curly spalted MANGO....looking KOA. Hahaha. Nice wood. It's looks like it definitely got some spalt and some curl. Or as someone else mentioned, it could be rotting. You may as well mail it to me. |

So Dave, would you say the bottom pic is bordering on quilted? |

Wipe a bit of naptha or alcohol on it -- it will show the grain quite a bit better than dry.... Thanks |

I guess pomelle is the extreme case of quilting. Right? I just grabbed a couple of pics off the interwebs. I'll have to take some pics of my stash sometime...I have some lovely pomelle sapelle and some pomelle hog that's almost as good as "The Tree"! Along with the BRW I have, I'm afraid to use it yet - I'd consider it a waste until I have about 15 to 20 good instruments under my belt ![]() Dave F. |
