Help needed, anyone any idea what Guitar set is worth in New Guinea Ebony. Colours, Blacks, Browns and Purple streaks. I had some one contact me tonight who has 1 cubic metre air dryed stock for sale. and I am trying to work out what it would be worth in Guitar sets, any help would be appreciated. Hi Don, I have asked the Guy in Sydney Australia to send me some photos as soon as I receive photos I will post on site, Also I posted same E-mail tonight in Australian and New Zealand Luthier Forum, & Bob Conner says Todd Tagart of Allied Luthier reckons its not suitable for Acoustic Guitar so I better check this out, Best Regards Robert, Don Williams wrote: Sounds very interesting... Hi robert, There are two striped ebonies from P.N.G., one very much like Macassar ebony, the other is not predominantly black but greenish brown with black stripes. Works as well as other ebonies with the same quality of finish.its a Very showy and eyecatching wood. we sometimes get this wood in (but rarely i might ad) and it sells about 300 pounds a cubic foot. thats about the same as macassar ebony. quite often you will see this wood being sold interchangably with macassar becouse it looks so alike but the later one has a noticable greenish ting. make sure that the wood in question is a diospyros species and not one of that woods that gets labled an ebony. i have not seen many boards wider than 7" in this stuff and the figure can quite bland compared to the showey macassar stuff. It tends to be much streighter grained. I have seen guitar sets of it and and they sell about 200 dollers plus if its the same wood more if it is highly figured (i.e. nice ink lines and lots blond materiel etc). Think of it as macassar really, Joel. |

Joel, That sounds like Mun Ebony. I have used that a few times and it is green/brown hued with nice black lines. I didn't know where it came from. Maybe New Guinea! Is it called that also or is that another ebony species also? |

I am pretty sure mun ebony (diospyros mun) comes from loas. there are alot "ebony,s" over 250 i think, some of the just shrubs a bit like rosewood. png ebony is alot darker than mun without so much of the blond streaking. Joel. |
