Thanks david, I will ask my wife, they use this green stuff at their occupational therapy clinic. I might have some bands kicking around the house , to see how effective they are at pulling in the binding.I like the look of wood binding, but have so far found it a PITA. to install, Need more practice.

I don't have photos of all the process, but you can see here how I use the tape only to put the binding in place before using the rope:

After the rope, which is cheap cotton, I put those wedges (pieces from 8mm spruce tone bars). They definitely add a lot of tension to the rope, but putting them like that they also push the binding vertically, which I find just as important. You can also put then at the surface of the sides, just in case you find that the wall of the binding is not vertical (this can happen if you use bindings taller than necessary, which shouldn't be done). Using the wedges to avoid gaps is like night and day, especially on archtops.

Good ideas with the spruce wedgies under the rope.keeping the binding down in the bottom of the channel.

Call me "Fumblefingers" but that looks like a lot of chances to damage a softwood top.

David look closely?the wedgies are under the tape ??. Perhaps WRC wedgies might work better vy soft ,or my favorite MDF.

As Duh Padma says there are lots of ways to skin the pig.... er... was it get the pig clean.... :)

Here is how I bind: http://www.lenaweelutherie.info/page6/page10/page10.html

Some things that are helpful are using bindings that are no thicker than say .065". Prebending the bindings so that they fit exactly and then very little tape, rubber band, rope, wishful thinking, etc. pressure is needed. You can use strapping tape too but if you fit the bindings well very little horse power is needed to make them fit well. And of course a proper binding routing jig also helps avoid the dreaded thinner binding on the top of the back's upper bout.

I also would dry fit my bindings and until they fit well the glue stays in the bottle.

As I built more my bindings got thinner and less deep mostly because I like the look of less bindings.
