That is one very, very cool guitar! Even for a guy from Arkansas! :P

Ron,

That's a mighty fine looking guitar - stunning in fact. You'd have to be really careful when playing it not to get hypnotised and mesmerised by looking at the top and pondering on the depth and fabulous complexity of the wood.

Well done - now lets hear you playing it [clap]

Thanks, Bob, I was hoping you'd check in and get a gander. That did turn out to be a great swap meet buy for me, I appreciate having a source for much material.

Ron

Hey Ron

I'm just looking at this again. After seeing Larry Carlton the other night, and being a huge fan of B.B. King (although Lucille is a solid body), I'm really interested in these guitars.

Is your top completely flat or slightly arched?

Did you use a center block?

What kind of neck joint did you use?

James, maybe the neanderthalish drawings below will answer your questions: The top is flat where the pickups and bridge are mounted, but curves off after that. It is approximately 2 1/4" thick in the center and about 1 15/16" at the edges.

There is a solid peninsula that holds all the mounted stuff.

The neck joint is glued in. The mortise was routed with the bottom angled about 3 degrees, and the tenon runs under the front pick up.

BTW, James, Lucille is a hollow body: Custom ES 335.

Ron

That's great, Ron, thank you!

I was watching B.B.s Bluesmaster DVD, and he said his Lucille's were solid, like big Les Paul's. I've always thought that a solid guitar of that size would be way too heavy to play, so I'm sure they can't be completely solid.

Nope. The guitar that's specifically named "Lucille" by Gibson is a redesign done by Abe Wechter when he was working in Gibson's R&D department in Kalamazoo. The most noticable tweak is the lack of "f" holes in the top (access is from the back). The inside is the same as the 335/45/55. He also told me that the fingerboard is just a bit wider, but that may be just the one sent to B.B.

Hey Ron!!! What a nice instrument--really outstanding! Somebody's gonna ask you for another one.... [clap]
