Does anybody have any experience with WoodFromWest.com? I'm interested in purchasing some Redwood tops and I noticed that WoodFromWest has their Redwood priced a decent bit lower than the competition. I'm wondering if there is a reason that their Redwood is cheaper than other vendors. Maybe the wood isn't properly dried, maybe there could be a lot of warped cuts, or maybe these tops could be poorly quartersawn? I'd love to hear some feedback on this vendor, particularly if you've used their Redwood in the past.

There’s no such address when I try to go there. There have been many fraudulent sites where a legitimate site is copied, the prices lowered, and orders accepted. When found, they are usually taken down after their host is contacted. A couple of times, my guitars have been offered for less than $100. Odds are that if you were able to make an order, you would have waited quite a while (like forever) for your wood to be delivered.

If you want redwood, go to Pacific Coast Woods, one of the sponsors above. Vince Strauss is reliable and you will get what he says you’re going to get. I have bought several times from him over the years and always been very satisfied.

I bought a redwood top from Wood From the West and it was as described and shipped fast so no problems. I also got myrtle and walnut back and sides sets from them that were also as advertised. That was five years ago. That they are still doing business suggests they are legit.

Maybe contact them and ask about the quality of the redwood tops and how well quartered they are.

Felly Smith at Fiddleback Woodshack out of Bend OR is a source of good redwood tops. He only has four sets on his website now, but I know from following him on IG that he has a bunch of redwood tops coming up that look nice. https://www.instagram.com/p/DL0ZSTcy7Uw/

I have bought many redwood tops as well as myrtle from them and have communicated with Kevin Connor personally as well. Totally legit and you are buying directly from the mill. He also supplies another website vendor and they sometimes post the same item. Some highly figured redwood tops may be from very old wood, but if you have an issue with any wood after you receive it, contact him and he will make it right.

Now that's some nice redwood! I may have to put one on the fancy top shelf!

David Maize in Cave Junction, OR has sold us some lovely redwood, Port Orford cedar, Englemann, etc., and also carries the usual side/back selection of claro, English walnut, bay laurel, black locust, and a few others. Mr. Maize's redwood is largely from salvaged structures (mills, trestles) or the occasional log that made it past the collection point and spend some time afloat before ending up on a beach. Prices have not been updated on the site since 2020, and given the 2022-2023 bout of extreme inflation, a call might be warrnated prior to an order being submitted. It may be that without the overhead of a Portlandia-style documentary folder and photos of the specific sets, those 2020 prices are still good. The master grade sets we received were that and more.
