Got around to gluing the fretboards onto two of the guitars. The cedar one has pine back and sides from my first dip in the pool building acoustics.

Was kind of disappointing with the cedar topped pine. No bass and thin sounding. Oh well, probably will not make another one like it again so no big deal. The spruce topped cherry also is a disappointment. The tuners are a cheap set I bought online and the two middle gears are almost impossible to turn when the strings are close to the proper tension. These are a smaller size than regular slot head tuners so I can not just replace them with another set. Poor manufacturing, maybe one day I will spend some time getting them to work. A lot of work between these two that did not pan out.

For some strange reason I picked up the cedar one again today. Actually did not sound too bad. Maybe the wood got the idea it is a guitar now. There is some fret buzz on the middle two strings. The saddle has a flatter radius than the neck so the two strings are closer down to the fretboard than the others. If I get a higher saddle and shape it I should be ok. It is so nice and easy to play with the lower tension of the 22" scale length and thin neck along with the small body. Think I will be spending quite a bit of time with this one.

Play them both for a while. It is not uncommon to be a bit disappointing when you first string them up, only to find that they start waking up with some playing time. Cedar seems to open up quite a bit very quickly as you are experiencing.

Are you sure your tuners are bad and not your nut slots? The strings could be binding up in the slots.

The tuners were horrid. Bought two sets and both bad. One set could barely turn them off the guitar. Spent an hour today with a file and up to 600 grit paper to remove the flashing and surface irregularities. Got the pair on the guitar and finally was able to tune it up. Sounds like it could use a resonance shifted over for a note. Also the 14th fret is low. Wanted to see what a wider nut width would be like, about 1 7/8".

The pine one has either grown on me or it decided to settle in. The sound seems to be more balanced, not all that much on the low end and the brightness has tamed down, still enough to not sound dull played finger style without nails. Narrow neck as compared to the other one, would not mind a guitar that would split the difference between the two widths. Got the neck profile just right on this one. Both are just a nice lap size.
