I broke the motor on my old craftsmans table saw durning my move and I'm now thinking about just getting a new tablesaw. For the price I think this might be right. It's practically the same as the next upper grade model ( http://www.grizzly.com/products/10-3HP- ... nife/G0690 ) cabinet saw that is just a 3hp motor and a little bigger table but about $600 bucks more. Anyone have or know someone who has one ? Any thoughts about this saw?

Not that it answers your query, Chris, but I was slightly disconcerted to see that Grizzly appear no longer to supply the 3-HP-Single-Phase-220V-Left-Tilt/G1023SL.

This saw IMO was the best of the Grizzly bunch ... the left tilt facility is just so useful ...

I have had mine for like 13 years and it is still going strong (even on European voltages)

I just went thru the whole tablesaw selection thing and ended up getting the G1023RL. I think the true cabinet saws have a better/more durable trunion which comes thru in a higher cost. The hybrid has the trunion of something like a contractor saw but has the enclosed cabinet.

Not sure if the average user like myself can tell the difference. Pick what you want.

Heck I went from a Montgomery Ward saw, to a portable, to the Grizzly. Really nice....

I see the G0690 is over 25% heavier than the G0715P, and presumably part of that is the heavier trunion.

For less money I bought a used 3 phase Powermatic 66 and converted to a 2 hp single phase by changing out the motor.
Unless you are looking for the weight savings they are advertising (which is usually not a great thing for tablesaws) I would avoid a "hybrid" saw.

The major thing I'm looking at is whether or not I really need to have a $1500 tablesaw with the better trunion and 3hp motor for the work and useage it will get. Truth is my old craftsmans has done what I needed it to do for all these years. Sure it would have been nice to have the extra hp a few times and better dust collection .
Some of the reasons I'm thinking about upgrading as opposed to buy a new $250 motor and trying to make it work since the OME motor isn't made is for the safety upgrades , better fence system and better dust collection.
The one thing I like about these 2 saws are that they have a 3 1/8 " cut height as opposed to 3" on 1000 series. That 1/8" makes a difference to me.
I would like to have the cabinet saw but don't know if I can justify the cost difference .
It would be nice to be able to see and use the saws to get an idea of the quality and a hands on comparison or maybe hear from some one who has . Would like to know if I can justify the $600 difference for my needs.
It's the old delema of want verses need, affordability and where the money will best be spent.

If you really need the full 3 1/8 depth of cut I would recommend a 3hp model.

On a big purchase like this I always try to look several years down the road. I seriously considered the "Hybrid" but I figured I would be using the thing for a long time and would regret not spending a few hundred more If I could swing it

One other benefit of a cabinet saw from what Ive read is more quiet operation, smoother running.

But I know what you mean, It would have been fantastic to see them running side by side to make a more educated decision

The cabinet saw is 25% heavier, and heavy is always better. Less vibration, quieter, and with a 3hp Leeson, it will cut safer, and you won't run out of power. If you ever use a dado blade, you will appreciate the extra power.

G0715P seems to have more spotty quality, but aside from those, users are happy.
I prefer Taiwan machines for the generally higher quality. But the G1023 is 3" cut height. And G0690 seems to be similar quality.

For what it's worth, I was faced with the same dilemma several years ago. I was finally ready to trade up my old Rockwell contractors saw. I loved the cabinet saws but with the little I would use it I decided to go with a hybrid. Mine is a 10" Jet. I have never regretted getting it. It is smooth and cuts true. It has a nice self centering rip fence and came with a wide miter gauge. Turns out it is all I need.

I'm sure the Grizzly will be even better. (maybe not. I see the new hybrid Jet model with the 52" rip fence sales for about $1,500 now...wow)

Being that I'm laid off from work going on a month now, I think I'll just order a new motor from grizzly and adapt/slap it on my old Saw . I may have to adjust some mounting holes on the mounting plate. I will have to go without overload protection for now unless I can adapt the old internal overload from the old motor to the new one. Grizzly has a 2 hp 3450 rpm capacitor run and start fan cooled enclosed motor that should work for around $300 .

A bigger motor will be a plus. I remember all those days of my 1 hp bogging down. Actually my jet has a 1 3/4 motor and it seems fine. A 2hp will be a winner

Grizzy motors tend to have weak bearings in my experience. I would think you could find a better motor for that price. Just a quick perusal of the 'bay shows a 2hp single phase farm duty Leeson for $289 with free shipping. Farm duty motors are pretty tough and I'm sure a new Leeson motor is much better than a new Grizzly motor. I'm sure there are some better deals to be had if you check out all the listings.
Personally I would still look for a good dael on a used cabinet saw - you may find one for not much more than the price you quoted for a new grizzly motor.

Sorry to hear of the lay off. Craigslist is a good source of AC motors for low $. ODP is ok, though TEFC is of course better. Currently there's a 1 HP for $35: http://tampa.craigslist.org/psc/tls/4459336550.html ... maybe a temporary solution. I usually search for "electric motor" and "electric motors", title only. Also "pool pump".

Well, I just ordered the Lesson 115048 3hp for the old craftsman tablesaw.
The old boy has gotten this far so it was the cheapest and easist repair and I'll still have my first table saw around for a while longer I guess.

Chris I think that was a wise move. Unless your building cabinets or furniture. If your like me you only use your table saw occasionally.
