Many thanks for the tips! 16-18 inch is exactly what I'm looking for.

A friend told me about a big car boot sale (can't remember which one it is) where he's seen lots of tools.
I'm going to go along with him sometime soon and try to see some in person.

Cheers!

OK... been meaning to post pix of this for awhile.

This is my fret leveling file. It's an early prototype from StewMac, made way back in the 80's - forerunner of the little short files with the wooden grips. It weighs over 2 pounds, so it requires no pressure from me during use, except to push it across the frets, and to then draw it back. It's a little over 6 inches long, and over 1.5 inches tall.

I had been talking about files to Erlewine at a NAMM show, and he told me he'd send me some new stuff to try out. One day this small but HEAVY box showed up with 4 different files. A note inside told me to try them all, keep the one I liked best, send the rest back with my reviews of the tools. This thing works great, and it's one of my favorite tools. Didn't cost me a cent..... nice.

Can anyone see these pix?

Don't know how I went this long without posting my favorite tools.
Stephen Boone's Finger planes. The large one is an older model that I modified myself.
