What am I missing. My Army brother was out on a mission and he was wondering why a guy had 3 cords on his acoustic. I have no idea.

My guess is different signal paths.

Looks like a couple of Larrivees...

pretty common to bring a mag pickup and a UST out as separate signals and let the sound guy mix them. He probably has something else inside - maybe a mic?

For an "acoustic" player he has a bigger pedalboard than a lot of gigging rockers I know.

He obviously plays three cord rock.

I know, low hanging fruit......

My first thought was, yeah, three chords work. Just throw in a minor, 7th, and maybe a sus4 here and there..... but then I saw the picture. That young fellow might represent the cutting edge of acoustic sound reproduction. We should be paying attention....

I really like making guitars without or with pickups in them. It really don't matter to me, I get slack from builders for cutting holes in the sides. I dont know , I think its great for the option, who cares, they want it.

At what point is "acoustic" no longer acoustic. When you listen to some "acoustic" finger style players, half of what they are playing would be inaudible without some amplification. And the tone modification units built into an "acoustic" instrument allow it to sound completely different from it's acoustic sound. Often less responsive instruments sound better than more responsive ones when plugged in. So perhaps we should make our guitars thick skinned and "log" like (it worked for Les Paul gaah ).

If he gets on his knees and sprays lighter fluid on his guitar and stomp boxes and ignites it I will understand where he's coming from.

Installed an Anthem in a G*bson Friday. Took out a Lyric and in the case was a previously removed Element. Long, hard, expensive path to pup nirvana and maybe my client is related to this guy. Anyway with installs my client has spent nearly $900 searching for that tone.....

Had I seen this pic I would have showed it to him and suggested that we just add more and don't remove anything....;). In fact we could install the jacks all around the lower bout for that early nuke vibe.

Does he maybe have three signal sources in the guitar that have to be kept separate so that they can be processed independently?

Maybe two of the cables are a send and a return with the pedal board in between and the the third cable is the final output. Jerry Garcia's electric guitars were set up like that but the send and return was done with a single cable.

Percussive players sometimes have contact mikes inside the body for the "drum" sounds, and they have separate signal path(s).
I do not know if that is the case here but one possibility.

Here is one such rig explained, but these guys are clever enough to get away with one cable!

If he doesn't like the Anthem he may as well just stop the search. I hate UST's but the mic definitely helps in the Anthem.

I never see it mentioned here but I've also used the miniflex 2 Mic and liked it for solo playing. Background noise in weddings or other instruments in band settings creates feedback problems, but it's literally 2 flexible mics that fit into the guitar. Sound can be adjusted by adjusting the position of the mics (they do rattle around if you aren't gentle with the guitar) as well as blending both mics with EQ etc. Requires a special cord that this guy could probably use as it carries 2 signals with only one output then splits into 2 inputs for the Amp/preamp/whatever.

Hmmm I think the secret to “why” may lie in the pedals. I see what may be a drum machine or looper. I wonder if he has different signals going to each device so that the signal is clean to each one instead of a daisy chain with a muddled signal. It LOOKS like he’s also using one of those TC Helicon voicelives (which would benefit from a clean sound especially if he is using vocal harmony).
Just a thought...

If you need a MIXER in your pedalboard, you are playing in the land of overkill.

Maybe so, but does it matter if that helps you to get the sound you want?

DANG!! The Army is doing recon missions on hipster joints with super cool bearded Millennials? Unless annoying kills, I don't think those guys really pose an immediate threat to national security.
