I thought topic could be useful and maybe entertaining.

My new favorite: the grain is oriented lengthwise because the sound travels through the grain lines.

What have you heard?

Pat

"Becoming a luthier will be a relaxing way to earn a decent living, and surely selling 3-4 guitars a year won't be that difficult."

I'd be embarrassed to say who told me this. ;)

True, if you're Ervin Somogyi.

That having a thin nitro finish on a Strat will enable the wood to "breathe".
Not sure what that means, but I like to make sure my wood is dead before I saw it up.

Sound runs along the braces, too.

There's 'magical' wood that ALWAYS makes a great guitar, no matter who builds it.

Factories make better guitars than individuals because they can be more precise.

...and so on...

I don't know about myths.... but I remember lots of goofy stuff like these....

"I need to have my aperture adjusted" (he meant the truss rod)

"Can you install a screaming bar?" (wanted a Floyd Rose)

"Isn't it cheaper to have you make me a guitar than buying one from the store?"

"What's the best wood for a guitar?"

"What's the best pickup for a guitar?"

"What's the best guitar out there?" (on the sales floor)

"I want it to sound just like Eddie's" (as in Van Halen)

My personal favorite:

"Great sounding guitars are built so light they are just on the cusp of disaster"

I know a lot of people have found this not to be a myth, but I am not one of them.

"All else being equal then ......(insert belief)"

I don't believe all else is ever equal in guitars.

Hah! Let's see, 75% off $16,000, that sounds about right!

Ken, that's a good one. I was just reading that this morning.

Another one: you get better tone if the strings push down harder on the saddle.

Lighter (or heavier), or stiffer (or looser) anything is better.

Pat

I fell for that one about ten years ago. Proved to be true, after I'd sold about five of them.

Luthiers all have beards and ponytails and work in a dimly lit room amid a pile of wood shavings doing nothing but carving stuff. A quiet, contemplative, and monastic existence.

Well, no. The perfume source was an unrelated species. (An unrelated genus also.)

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.
