What would be something cool I can get him for Christmas that has to do with Luthier stuff?
Or really, what would you guys like to get?
My dad is very into guitar building, and frequents this forum a lot, so I wouldn't be surprised if he saw this haha.
Thanks!

Gift voucher? - that way he gets what he want/needs.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

+1 to Colin. Luthiers are hard to shop for, because each one of us has very specific needs as far as materials and tools go.

Or better yet, have him order what he wants, but let you gift wrap the package after it arrives :) That's my preferred way of getting guitar building presents, so I can use the stuff immediately on the special day. Vouchers always feel anticlimactic as gifts.

Each year I give my son a gift certificate to one of our wonderful wood vendors - each year he builds a beautiful guitar out of it. This year I am also giving him a membership in the Guild of American Luthiers (58 bucks). If he is already a member of the GAL you could give him one of the Big Red Books (assuming he doesn't have the set).

I would gladly take any of those things myself....
