I'm thinking of doing a maple background for rosettes. Actually, already cut the circles. The outside diameter is set. But I'm wondering about the inside diameter. Should I take it all the way to the sound hole? Or should I stop a 10nth inch in or so. Anybody have thoughts/pictures?

I will rout out purfling & wood fill slots in that maple basis

Mike

Probably depends on how you do the purfling. A spruce to maple transition will likely show a glue line...

That's a good point, and if I pulled in a tenth or so, I'd use a transition strip. Just wondering if anyone has done what I mentioned

I haven't, but I think a dark piece would be a mystery.

If you take it all the way to the edge of the soundhole a soundhole binding could then be a nice contrasting feature

I have decided to not go to edge of sound hole. All in. Basis circles cut. :)

Well, this is how it turned out. 5 more to go, if u have thoughts, now is the time to tell me. I purposely decided against a transition perfling from coco to maple. I used an arc cutting jig for the small bandsaw to cut the inner coco ring.
