I use a wet wash cloth between the steam iron and the wood. The cloth being wet holds the heat and steams also. Not too much trouble with scorching.

I use a folded paper towel and keep spraying it with water. Really keeps the scorching down in tight bends, like the waist, which is the only time it's really needed for the way I work on a pipe, usually bending between 350 and 425*.
