I would like to build a proper buffing machine (rather than pay Stewmac more than 500 dollars + expensive international shipping) but the problem is, where do I find the long shaft with threaded end?

You should look in a bearing supply house then take the shaft to a machine shop for the right and left hand threads.

I bought a long piece of cold rolled steel rod from a local supplier and then had a machinist put the threads on the ends for me- one left hand and one right hand.

Or you might find something prefabricated with thread on one end and get used to changing mops.

I used a go cart axle. I works very well.

I just bought a fully threaded rod at hardware store. nuts and lock washers on both sides of buffing wheels. no problem so far and I have done a lot of buffing. by the way, the rod was 3/4 inch. 1 inch would probably be better.

I was wondering about using a threaded rod, how well does it work? I'm not sure having it machined by a machinist is cheaper than buying it from Stewmac.

It works fine. Pretty much the same as one you'd buy. Maybe doesn't look as pretty, but nevertheless, does the job well.
