Hmm, not sure. Was thinking black but maybe black and red. What do you suggest?
Well, black for sure as the outermost bands. Then add to that, perhaps, one of the colors in that rosette. (Red might work fine, btw.) Whatever you choose, repeat the scheme around the entire guitar for a cohesive appearance.

AND-- note to everyone else-- great looking work, thanks for posting. These are always inspiring threads.

Steve
Good idea and thanks for the advice! I'm still trying to figure out what I'm going to do for binding. the top is WRC and the back and sides will be wenge. I was thinking of doing a coco binding, but not sure yet.

Well, I have just finished a guitar and then spending some time breaking it in. My next big job was to build my wife a computer. That is not up and running. So now I finally get to think about starting the next one. What to build, what to build?

Hi,

lots of Ziricote builds going on here, nice. A question to all the Luthiers out there building with Zircote at the moment, I think we have 3 people right now?

Did you have any problems with suddenly appearing cracks, aka Mexican Crackwood....

Just asking out of interest,,,

Cheers, alex

Looking awesome tony!
Does anyone know where I can buy some BRB purfling? I was talking with a friend about making some, but I kind of want
to get some sooner so I can get the rosette in.

It is SV. I use the StewMac colortone dyes directly on the maple and seal with shellac.

So far so good, I had a crack in the back set on the 00 12 fret and located it so as to be gone when the cutaway was cut out. The rest of that set was ok but I flooded the same area on the other half with CA just in case. Both sets were in my humidity controlled shop for at least a couple years and the OM set is without problems so far.

Hey, just wondering, do you need to use plastic purfling as to not soak up the dye?

Not if you are careful. The due doesn't soak in real far and doesn't bleed much. On my #2 that I'm making I used curly maple bindings and what I did to keep them from being dyed was to put a wash coat of lacquer over the bindings. Then go back with the scraper and make sure that you clear any off of the areas to be dyed. Then dye away. It worked for me but you just have to take the time to deal with it, and it's time consuming.

Smart man. CA is your friend with Ziricote and Brazilian RW.
The nicer the wood is for building with, the more it is susceptible to cracking.
That's my theory...and I'm sticking with it.

You could dye some b/w/b with the transtint dyes Stew Mac sells. But I am sure you can find red dye somewhere else local. Put the purfling in a large zip lock bag, add dye, wait a day or two, and presto! b/r/b purfs!

I accidentally made some one time it requires bwb purfling, a sharp chisel, and a finger.

laughing6-hehe Too bad it oxidizes to a darker color though.

Fortunately, bloodwood stays pretty bright, and LMI has veneers of it, and black fiber sheets of various thickness, so you can make them yourself. They don't even have to be glued together before bending and installing. Just route the channel to the right width for the 3 strips together (test on scrap), and make sure you get glue between all of them as you install.

The way Carvin guitars are photographed is very nice. You can see they have two tower lights along side in order to highlight the curvature of the body face. Great composed shots.

I went out and got the stuff to make a set of these lights. Hopefully this will end up providing a very nice composed shot of the overall face and back of my guitars.

Now I have to figure out how to hold them for the shot.

Nice shots and work, David.

Sorry, been busy this wknd. So, nothing too exciting, just scraped 1 face of a pink ivory board to show the difference of some of it that turns brownish. I'll post in another thread to get some opinions on how to keep it PINK.
