Hi All,

I'm planning to build a workshop this fall. Live in Tucson AZ so biggest problems are cooling and increasing humidity. The shop will be a wooden shed, 12 .x 20, on concrete, with blown-in insulation, a reflective roof coating and a mini-split HVAC system. I am researching the mini-split systems now, and wondered if any of you have used one. If so, what make, and how would you rate it? Thanks, Beth

Yeah Chris, me too! My doc u build will go something like this: "I just happened to have this blown in insulation laying around, so it doesn't cost anything. These two by fours were reclaimed from another shed so they were only 5 cents each. The foundation is free because it's being built on our unused basketball court (this one is actually true). "

The Fujitsu mini-splits are well rated. Bear in mind you'll want to stay on top of the air filter in a dusty environment.

I have a mini split in my shop. The one I got is a heat pump as well. It serves me well. it does not de-humidify enough to keep the shop at the required RH, but it keeps the place cool even with the dehumidifier running. Temps in the 100* range this summer and 90% humidity, regularly. You shouldn't have too much humidity problem in Arizona though. Get one a step bigger than might be recommended. If mounted correctly, the inside portion will be mounted above 6' on the wall. This helps with dust, but you really need to keep those filters clean. Mine is a Pace Air, which might be considered an off brand, but I discovered in my research that many of them are built in the same factory with different names on them. Most have exactly the same specs and features. Some are much more expensive. Don't know if they are better. Strangely like luthier built guitars!
