Hey fellas, I'm thinking of doing a sunburst on my next build and was wondering how to make that super fine burst. Just barely around the edge of the soundboard.

Thanks in advance!

I would use an airbrush.

Airbrush, spray with the guitar flat on its back rather than hanging, and practice on scrap first.

I spray bursts upside down, with the top for the guitar facing the floor. This keeps overspray off the guitar.

I think an airbrush would be preferred. If you don't have an airbrush, you're still okay. Set your spray gun with a round spray pattern and just enough air pressure and flow to atomize your mix the way you want. You will, of course, experiment on cardboard for that step. Practice until you're confident of your flow and your touch on the trigger. Then set your instrument up and aim WELL OUTSIDE the perimeter of the instrument. With a gentle finger on the trigger to limit flow, and with the air pressure you've determined on your cardboard test piece, spray all around the instrument. Gradually "sneak in" on the edge of your instrument. Go all around, starting and stopping well off the piece. Stop and look it over. Repeat as needed to get the effect you want. It can be done. I've done it, and so can you. Mine was so gently shaded that I didn't even call it a sunburst. I call mine "shading." But the principle is the same. Here's proof: Vintage amber overall with a super-subtle and transparent dark brown shading about 2"--3" all around the edges. I did this with a standard gun, as described above. Go for it!
