Hello All,

I am new to the forum, and new to guitar building. I am about the embark on my first build, an OM like design.

My question involves nut width. The few sets of plans I have looked at set the nut width to 1.69 inches. I would like to build my guitar with a 1.75 inch nut. The current plans I am planning to use are drawn with a 1.69 width, but note that the nut can be made as wide as 1.75 inch.

If I make the nut 1.75 inches wide, should I also go ahead an increase the rest of the guitars neck width proportionally? If so would it be as simple as using the current neck design on my plans, but to bump up all width measurements along the fretboard by multiplying the design width by 1.036 (so the percent change of the neck width along the length is proportional to the change at the nut)? I assume I would need to do the same with the bridge/saddle?

As we are only talking 1/16th of an inch at the nut, am I making this to complex? Or overlooking any other changes that would be required to the guitars design?

Thanks!

Eric

Personaly I would widen the neck at the nut only and let the width at the body joint remain the same .

Normally a 1 3/4 nut is combined with a 2 1/4 string spacing at the bridge. Usually a fingerboard for this is 1 3/4 at the nut and 2 1/4 at the 12th fret. Make the fingerboard to this and shape the neck to it.

"Typical" taper is 3/8" nut to 12th fret. So a 1 3/4" nut would up the widths to 2 1/8" at the 12th (cf 1 11/16 and 2 1/16). That said, you can make the taper whatever you want and/or let the saddle spacing drive it. When I do 1 3/4" nut, I also make the neck thinner as well as wider.
