I usually make a bunch, so I don't have to do it again in a year or whatever. As has been said, with drum sander and a table saw sled, it goes quite fast, besides its a great way to use up scraps; I have used mahogany, spruce, maple, birch, ash, poplar, and probably a few more. I can't detect any difference in sound that I can attribute to choice of wood in these.

As for buying them ready-made, because it makes sense if you 'value your time' etc... Well, why stop there? Why not buy fingerboards, bridges, rosettes, bindings, even whole necks, end blocks and braces already shaped, and really speed things up?

As I recall, the price was not so bad... but if you study the video, you can see how it is built.

Although a plan would be really helpful...

just a little update: I've decided to not get the bandsaw until I get my first commission. Instead I got a really good jig saw and will get a small benchtop table saw for straight cuts, so I'll just rip some strips of wood and do it on the table saw several at a time.

I built my shop up over several years, still am really. After one commission I got a band saw. Thought I died and went to heaven. Many years later I got a drum sander, thought I died a thousand deaths and went to heaven. It's kind of nice to do it that way but at the same time I was kicking my self for not getting nice equipment early on.

FWIW I never had a table saw and almost see no worth in it... hmmm maybe I shouldn't try one and continue with the kicking :)

If that's the case, start with tentalones. Then you'll be ecstatic when you switch to kerfed lining (not to mention you'll understand why it was invented!)

Can someone tell me what is a tentalone?

As for tool purchase I am trying to start up a shop with very limited fund and no one to back me up. Already have enough trouble paying the rent as it is, so now I gotta do what I can with what I have until I get a commission. Just think, trying to start a shop with only enough to buy one wide belt sander...

A table saw still has its use, like cutting kerfed linings, slotting fretboards, cutting dadoes or tenon, building shelves and benches (when needed). It's just hard to make a straight cut with a jig saw... However I do wonder about taking the jig saw and mounting it upside down like a router...
