Seeing the other thread about airbrusshing reminded me that I need to acquire an airbrush to do some shading and touch-up work on a project that I need to wrab up. Can somebody recommend me an airbrush that would be appropriate for this type of work and possibly doing some bursts. Are there different tips that are needed?

Get a Paasche H gun with tips numbers 1, 3, and 5. A long 15 to 20 hose and
a few large bottles.

It is a single action gun.

It is the work horse of the airbrush industry, amerikan made for over 100 years.

Lots of airbrushes out there...this is the one for just about anything from spot touchups to spraying glazes on potter for firing. Ain't nothing better for our kind of work. Period!

There are 8 0r 9 major pro airbrush manufacturers and a plethora of styles, actions and purposes.

Yes the Iwata suggestion is a good gun, it is also expensive.

Mine are over 30 years old - Miller 2000's. They have no moving parts, except for a selection of replaceable nozzles. Mine came with a little compressor which still works.

I hate to agree with the Padma too often, but I have a Paasche H which I used for 20+ years on model airplanes and now guitars, works great, parts are available at hobby shops and it is probably the most reasonable priced quality airbrush.

Paasche H for me also. I found these guys to be reasonable.http://www.airbrushoutlet.com/ I'd like to try an Iwata to see what a double action feels like. The single action is pretty easy to use. The gun did all I wanted it to do and extra cups are pretty inexpensive.

I've done taxidermy for years using a Paache VL. I like the double action. I havn't used it on a guitar yet. http://www.dixieart.com is a good site to buy airbrush stuff. I think they all work fine, just getting the needle set right is key. And keeping it clean. And then you have to have dry air going to the brush too. I have a little Scorpion air compresser that is really works great.

sdsollod, I use it for spraying sunburts on mandolins. I agree with the Padma (Oh Nooooo, me to ) about the tcpglobal site. I ended up with a little gravity feed Master dual action that I really like and I like the fade capability of the dual action. Small cup but you don't use much dye for a sunburst and it was on sale and cheap.

Like Da Padma sez. get a nice long hose and get the quick disconnect for it too, very nice little item and it is press-to-connect too so easy to re-connect.

That all depends on

whats the stuff you are spraying,
and the viscosity of that stuff.
and the particles in suspension (if any) of that stuff
and the type and make of gun you are using
and the effect you are after
and how many min. or hours you spraying for.
and weather it is a Wednesday or a Friday when you are spraying.

arn't you glad you asked.

but most rigs work between 25 an 50 lbs.

I was given a Binks Wren A by a lady friend a while ago she said she saw it at a yard sale for 6 bucks and couldn't resist getting it for me. There was no hose. I know zip zero nada about airbrushing. Looking at the service info pdf on the details page/tab ( http://www.binks.com/Products/SprayGuns/ManualSprayGuns/TouchUp/WrenAirbrush/tabid/202/Default.aspx ) I see there are B&C bodies and fluid controls.

So

Are they decent quality? Do you need the B or C to splacquerquer, or just a better tool?

Ignore the different bodies or models.

Yours is an antique but that don't mean its not good.

This gun is modeled after the Paasche H. the delivery system is virtually identical.

What you are referring to as the Fluid Control Assembly are in reality the "needle and the tip"

and come in 3 sizes as in small, medium, and large. The small will do a burst for you but the large is much more suitable.

It will spray lacquer and just about anything else you can thin down....yes, it will spray that too.

Washing out a gun means more than passing solvent or thinners through it. It means you disassemble the needle and tip (Fluid Control Assembly) and go at it with Qtips and pipe cleaners and some really fine wire as in paper clip and or finer.

Hoses are cheap. Score one and pass some water through at about 30lbs. Then you will know. If you decide to seriously use it, then get a water trap between the compressor and the gun or you and the finish will not be happy campers.

Take the gun into an large art store that sells air brushes....the paasche hose will probably fit, but try out the various other hoses. There is a Binks distributor or dealer in just about every city on the continent, usually auto supply places.

The Binks is another one of them workhorses that just don't quit. The car and movie set spashers of days gone by liked the Binks along with de Vilbis and Passche air guns and a few others. Although a reliable gun for quick touch ups and small jobs the Passche H has it beat in the pro artist studio.

They for sell complete, hose, 3 tips/needles and a few bottles for up to $30 on that there ebay site.

I read a bit more it looks like the medium and large tips and needles will not fit the A body, only the fine, but all three fit the b&c bodies?

Sorta want to have my son do a wall mural using interior flat latex. Do-able?
