If I understand things correctly, the airway buffs run cooler so less worry about overheating while buffing. They require flanges on either side to sandwich the wheels and secure them onto the shaft. Seems the big cost of using this type buff is the flanges which can be $50 per pair ($100 if you have buffs on each end of the shaft).

For those that have airway buffs, could you describe the shape of the flanges? Is there anything special about the shape and how it grips the wheels or shaft? Could one make their own flanges out of 3/8" aircraft grade plywood or something similar? Likely wouldn't work if the shape of the flange is something other than a flat disk against the buffs.

Thanks!

I would hesitate to say that the flanges can keep the wheels from generating heat while buffing .... cant see how something thats only 5-6 inch diameter has an effect on the outer buff edge thats 6 inches away, and has compound on it generating friction as you use it.

I made my flanges from 1/4 inch baltic birch, and they work just fine .....

Tony, are you running airway buffs?
