"Geez" is right. "Complaint" vs. "gloat" is clearly a false choice and Haans obviously meant neither.

Ok guys....

I received a kit of 230 HSS drill bits, from 3/64th to 1/2 by 64ths. A kit of 75 screwdrivers. A nice jigsaw and the LMII manuel Fret slotting system.

It is both rude and intellectually clumsy to suggest that your opponent is an alcoholic absent any shred of evidence or suggestion.

But seriously...it's really not that difficult to both get your point across and to avoid a descend into boorish behavior.

As an observation from an outsider, Todd's comment was designed to get a response much more so than Haan's was. Haan's offered an olive branch which was unfortunately declined. I'd suggest anyone on the forum avoiding the type of comment which is guaranteed to illicit the type of exchange just seen. Of course this is just my humble opinion.

Absolutely correct, Darrel...my question was designed to elicit a response from Haans (and not an illicit one, I would hope)...specifically whether his post was a smugly superior gloat or crabby complaint...in either case not too difficult a question. Following reiteration of that very point, he's suggested a number of unkind things which certain readers have selectively chosen to ignore. As to the why of my query? If complaint, I suspect any number of us might have risen for a toast to gladder things, and if a gloat...well, a turd in the punch bowl is reason enough to avoid the grog. As to an olive branch, I'd suggest reading that specific post again...it's anything but.

And I

I've said this before Todd. You seem like a reasonably smart guy who has been quite helpful to many over the years. This is countered by a smarmy know-it-all demeanor, or at least that's the way it comes across to me. Communication in an environment like a forum can be difficult as the subleties of face to face dialogue are often lost in translation. It is however quite easy to pick up the difference between harmless and mean spirited. You need to take a breath and step back sometimes before you post.

Well... slotted, square, phillips, hexa, torx... short, long, medium, mini, extra long, short handle, longe handle, curved, precision, etc...

I always worked with only an all-in-one rachet-screwdriver but, you know... it's a gift.

I have to build some screwdriver holders.

Somebody tell that "inquiring mind" that Al-anon is not about alcoholism. It's about learning to run your own program, NOT others. AA is about alcoholism.

And smarmy? def: "excessively or unctuously flattering, ingratiating, servile, etc." Mmm...not thinking that's all that accurately descriptive an adjective.

Reasonably means just that. You may have to dig a little deeper into the definitions of smarmy Todd until you can find the most appropriate one. It's more around "Cheesy, pretentious and smug". Once again, just what comes across in your delivery from time to time. You'd be a lot more valuable to the forum sticking to technical help and not trying to evaluate someone's state of mind.

This is getting quite tiresome, but I will try one more time. Read this:

http://www.al-anon.alateen.org/new_8question.html

Now, while a large part of Al-anon deals with the relation of folks to the addicted (alcohol, drugs, food, you name it), it deals with those people coping with THEIR problem, their attempts to control the addict. Once you are in the program for a while you find that out. You go in thinking how do I deal with this person, and learn that it is YOU that you have to deal with.
And of course I can only deal with myself, so at this point Todd, I will leave you to keep digging if you care to...

To the rest of you , I am sorry that this thread got hijacked. I was only trying to tell of my Christmas.

I apologize as well for hijacking what should be a light hearted thread. I was correct in assuming that the Oxford English volumes and the associated etymology aren't on many peoples shelves. You can rest assured that however "Smarmy" is interpreted, it is not a term of endearment.

Happy New Year guys!! [:Y:]

I got 2 boxes of Mirado Black Warrior Pencils !!!! [:Y:] [:Y:]

Ha !!!, for those of you who scoff: " A mere box pencils" You have obviously never used Black Warriors.
(You also are obviously not afflicted with the "where did I put that darn pencil" disease.)

But, I say unto you a good pencil is a fine thing and getting rarer these days.
Did mention the features ?
Pencils feature a black lacquer finish for added style! (I might add that black looks much better behind the ear than yellow)

* 100% premium cedar pencils. (This is a must and goes almost without saying. No stinkin plastic fake wood pencils here)
* Round barrel makes for writing comfort. (And scribing ease.)
* Sharpens to a fine, exact point. (The lead doesn't break off somewhere up in the pencil.)

And smoooooooooooooth. Yes real craftsman and shop rats choice Black Warrior pencils and you should too !!

L.

Agreed.

Don't thank me, thank the young Kurdish boy who said that in the documentary "The First Movie". Great film, I would highly recommend it (not political or religious, just a capturing of the humanity in all of us and the intrinsic wisdom children can have).

Thanks for the reminder Link! Those are the BEST pencils I have ever run into and I'm almost out. That is the best testimonial I've ever read too and a photo of you pointing at the pencil would make a much better ad than Ronald McD pointing at his greaseburger sappy meal.

Didn't get this multi-use present out of it's wrapping till yesterday. Just try to use common sense when choosing which of the functions of this tool you choose to utilize [uncle]

Bob,
I like the standard HB for most everything. You have to sharpen a bit more but it is soft enough to not break the lead all the time and soft enough not to make too deep a cross grain scratch. I have a draftsman's pencil with hard lead in it for fine joinery that I will use for drawer dovetails and the like.

Which is a #2, if someone thinks about this in US hardness scale. Unfortunately none of my local office supplies seem to stock them. :-( ... some folks mention that they like the #4 as well. Lee Valley's pencils (which do not have a round shaft, but the regular hexagon) come in a sample pack of different hardnesses ... gotta love that.

Thanks, Link.

Filippo

Amazon has the #2's, I just ordered a couple of boxes. Probably not worth it with shipping but OK for me since I didn't have to pay shipping.
