My belt sander lived a long hard life for its $89 cost. I was making magnets and statues for my photo biz. Now, I am messing with hardwoods. Shaping necks.... I was thinking I want a Spindle sander, a 12" disc sander and a new belt sander.
I looked at the Delta stuff Rockler has on sale ( 2nd Rockler comment today, I was at the store in Pittsburgh), then got prices on Delta. Then looked at the stuff Grizzly has. Man, I like the designs and prices better. Are the 1/3, 1/2 hp stuff ok to use or go 1 hp + for the few $$$ more. Is it necessary for my uses?
I am looking at the $159 12"disc sander (1HP), the 4x36 belt, 6"sander combo for 113.00, the $225 spindle sander.

The next step up to cover those 3 "types" will bump me up another $500 to 1k+

If they will do the job for now and work a few years, or will a Cocobolo neck kill one or a few? is what I would like to know.

John-
In Canada the company that sells 'similar quality' tools to Grizzly is BusyBee - I've got their 1HP 12" disc sander and a 4x36 belt sander as well. They seem to work fine, though I would definitely prefer to have a 6" wide belt sander.
Generally I find that when the sander seems to be slowing down a bit (laboring) it's time for new/sharper abrasive belt/disc.
The disc sander is very handy; I could probably do without the belt sander.

Cheers
John

Hi John,

Before you make a decision, consider a horizontal belt sander. I find it to be one of the most useful tools for instrument
making.

Grizzley has them at various prices.

The Ridgid OSS is a near perfect tool for a small luthiery shop - great for templates, molds, patterns, final shaping on bridge wings, etc.

+1 one on that - I bought one about a year or so ago and love it. Amazing value for that price.

I bought the Hitichi 8" disk with 4"x36 belt because it is heavy duty cast and I caught it on clearance at Lowes for $115. Otherwise I had my eye on the Rigid OSS at Home Depot for $216. The Rigid gets lots of positive comments.

BusyBee and Grizzly actually have common roots (The owners are family) but over time Grizzly has definately become the bigger/better of the two. Origionally they had a non competition agreement, where BusyBee stayed up North and Grizzly didn't advertise/ship to Canada. I'd assume something changed and that agreement is a thing of the past as my last Grizzly catalog had a big flyer about their new shipping and brokering services for us Canucks. After checking I notice BusyBee now ships to the US as well.

I love Grizzly Tools. Everything we've bought from them has been a good value and their customer support is outstanding.
