Got more seeds of Diospyros discolor Willd. and plan to grow more saplings. Here are some germinated seeds.

Chris

It's locally called "hairy persimmon" or Taiwan ebony. The fruit has very little meat and too big seeds. I've read its heartwood is jet black. Now it's the right time for matured fruits to fall. I collected them in the campus of a University 5 km away. Does anyone know how long it takes to grow to the minimum diameter(at least 10", I suppose) for qs fingerboards?

Catching up on some basement renovations. 3 years ago (count 'em, THREE years ago!) I gutted and started rebuilding the entire basement. I am closing in on finishing it off. Yeah!

And met and talked guitars with another OLF'er from a couple towns over.

Tom, as Dave Ray sang, "She's a big, wide momma, she got big fine legs". ("Keep your hands off her")
It's 18" at the lower bout. Here's the mould...

It'll be a short 24.625" scale and 14 fret neck and probably medium strings. I've got the ribs cut to dred size, but t this point I'm unsure as to how deep to make them. Absolutely going to be a cowboy guitar.

Thanks John. It's pretty simple really. Get a good book on bandsaw setup, wax the table before attempting something like this and mostly, GO SLOW. Took me about 7 minutes to make the cut. Still, after it was cut, I spent a good 2 hours with various sanders carefully getting it right.
Here's the ribs...I'll have the box together tonite and we'll see how it taps.

Haans,

Curious to hear how deep you made the Prairie State body. The ones I have seen (and the 17+" one I am building) are at OM depth.

Thanks!

Glenn

Braces cut a while back, shaped to final gluing size today, and ready to glue to the top. Tops are under the books in this picture, and brace for 2 guitars are on top of the acrylic template, that is on top of the books.

Built my go-bar deck last week -

last missing piece before I assemble - join and thin the back, make a radius template, complete the kerfed lining.

Hopefully not one of the ones that contact by only email, wish to pay with credit card, and would rather buy guitars that are already ready [uncle]
Chris

Haha... No. I've actually got quite a large customer base in Singapore for some reason. The gentleman who is buying this one owns a couple electrics of mine as well.

Visited Doug Ingram for a quick "hello" meet and when I left three hours later my head was spinning.

For a ukulele player, trying to grasp the differences of eight or ten guitars one after another was hopless task. Doug, being the gracious host, was patiently explaining the differences and history of many of the styles and designers.
His newest guitar was impressive. The tornavoz gives a rich, robust tone from a rather small sized guitar.
I have started looking for more information on the tornavoz. Just think, a richer, bassy baritone ukulele.

Thanks Doug

Sounds pretty good when tapped, although it doesn't make the cool top & back "sustain echo" at the moment. It seems to be very finicky about that. When I first clamped it up in preparation for gluing, it made a pretty good echo, but still sounded a little tight, so I opened it back up and shaved on the top braces some. Clamped up again and no more echo :o So I kept shaving and clamping it up to test, and got the top sounding more open (probably could have gone further still, but I'd already removed a lot of wood and didn't want to overdo it), and some echo back. So I glued it up (cello style, removing a few clamps at a time and squeezing some hide glue into the gap), and what do you know, echo is gone again gaah

I think I'll sand the top a little thinner though, so hopefully that will get it back again. It's currently around .115-.120. But then it will probably be competely different again as soon as the bridge is glued on :|

Maybe I shouldn't be expecting so much from my first build, but hey, I gotta figure this stuff out sometime.

That's gorgeous, Filippo! I'd love bigger pictures!

I'm about ready to glue the top and back to the rim on number 2. Number 1 was standard scalloped, so I'm taking the learning opportunity to see what parabolic brings to the table. Unfortunately today was my last until next summer as a free man. Tomorrow all of us teacher head back
