The Story of me New Shop

So after putting up with techies and musicians who, hung around and produced nothing in my upstairs studio, I said enough is enough and I kicked them and their gear out. (Ever noticed how gear stinks of beer, cigarettes and road dust.) Maybe if they had produced just one track ..(all them videos I shot and posted myself). Besides they wern't paying rent or even offering to shoot me some bucks, just hung around drinking my beer and smoking.

Me then pulled the carpet and made a few work benches. Yup! Is now my new shop. Assembly is in now gonna be upstairs where it is warm. With windows and light. Yay!

See old space full of computers and techie junk. Eight years in television, I don't need no more techie junk around me.



See new space, all nice clean, new workbenches. Yay.



This was last January

Then me settle in to do some work and here is what me build over this last year. The shop is now finished.

Built out of # 3 SPF (spruce pine and fir) from the local lumber yard. Some glue and some screws hold it all together, Often wonder what holds me together.


Heres pics on doing all the shelf brackets for hanging the instruments and the tool shelf racks.

Me wanted a really funky shop, just like the old guys that taught me a thing or two use to has.

So...











Notice the threaded dowel for me new vice. NO! It was not done with a die cutter.
Yup, hand cut threads, just like the way they use to once upon a time, long long ago, in
our distant future when the system shut down and the electricity ran out. You hearin what
me saying?



All the brackets, shelves, vices, counters drawer fronts and doors have been carved to match. As I started building this new shop right after Christmas last January, I guess my mind was into a "Santas workshop" sort of like the "old timers" would have built. So I started carving everything...not a fine detailed carving job, but enough to set the mood for a pleasant shop to work in. Didn't realize how much of a shop I had to haul upstairs. Is gonna look great once the winter plastic is down and I get proper storm windows built for next year. (Me been saying that for 17 years now)

Heres the new bench doggie with a hand carved wood screw vise.




The doggies name is Buddie~Satva. I am training him to be a bench dog. tongue.gif He is 4 months young, half a poodle and half a Tibetan Terrier . Him shouldn't grow to more than 15-18 lbs. just big enough to sit on my lap and sleep on the end of the bed. Him don't understand "end of the bed yet" and thinks the pillows are for him...him also thinks the floor is his toilet....me teaching him otherwise, but is hard to house train a small doggie in the winter.


Other than that him and me, well we gets along just fine.

So its been one year now and the shop has gone to this.





Yup ...me built a wall, with windows and doors to keep the grand kids out and the sawdust in.


then me built a wall hung cabinet,




and a counter under it....





that runs along the inside of the wall....





with the doors and a rack to store long stock like banding strips, another counter and
a shelf unite for me all hand planes...





All that crown molding is actually a drawer to hide stuff in....






also got rid of the "Tommy bar" ... this is much more convenient and easier ...





So it has been the building of all the above, then all the carving of it that has kept me away from
posting and builds for the last 3 months...Now that its all built...I figure about another 2 or 3 days
of emptying the cardboard boxes into the new shelves, reorganizing, sharpening all the blades
and then me and doggy should be making sawdust again. Actually doggy don't make sawdust...
but him real good at chewing any thing that hits the deck... is what dogs do.

Yup ...him my bench dog. and thats my fantacy work shop.

Great shop! Lots of atmosphere...and a hound that needs a haircut...I have two bouviers so know all about how quickly they get scruffy looking.

Seriously, you should be proud, the shop looks like a great place to pass the time building instruments.

Thanks for the tour. Looks kind of like how I would imagine your shop to look. I've used the drawer hidden in the crown before, one of my all time favorites.
A lot of people over look the importance of a bench dog. Mine is of the feline persuasion, but provides much of the same services as your model.
I look froward to seeing more of your builds, so have at it.

What a great space. It can be a little difficult sometimes to put in the time to fancy the place up. When you think of the amount of time we spend there it sure is nice to make it as homey as possible. All your carving sure adds to the warmth. Love the shelf supports. Only one thing I saw that I found a little disturbing. That looks like a row of Job Mate clamps. If they are just through them away now and save yourself the slow pain of watching them brake. Even at 50% off............

I remember this thread from a while back and I got the very same feeling reading it this time as I did the first time - I found myself grinning from ear to ear and feeling, well.... Happy!

Padma my friend you create good karma in the spaces that you work in.

I have a little bench dog too about the same size as yours - maybe someday they could sniff butts together...

The, I wish I had the windows and light you have...I'm envious. My whole shop is in a dingy basement with no windows.

Love the shop - especially all those windows . I have one little 24" window and its behind the drill press
