Just curious what size of dust collecter would be adequate to handle a thickness sander, planer/jointer and variuos other power tools?(one at a time) Right now I am using a16 gal shop vac...works ok but could be better.

I have a 1HP Jet dust collector with a 1 micron Dust Dog canister filter- I don't have much to compare it to other than the shop vacs it replaced, and it is a vast improvement over those. It has a dedicated run to my table saw and then a spare hose with blast gates that I switch around to my other tools. I also have an ceiling-mounted Delta air filter but I don't use it very much since I set up the Jet.

I scored my first dust collector this morning from a guy selling out his woodworking equipment to move out of country. I have no plans for running more than one piece of equipment at a time so hopefully this 2 HP Grizzly unit will suffice:

I'd seriously consider getting the Wynn 1 or .5 micron canister conversion for any bag system. Well worth the money, and your filter losses will be much lower.

Thanks much for the info guys, thanks Todd for the hp and cfm numbers. The thickness sander can throw a lot of dust and now I have a base of numbers to start from. I suppose I'll set up a 6" duct system so as to do it only once and start shopping for a 2hp and 800cfm minimun dust collector since I will be running only one machine at a time.

2 HP Dust Monkey. I'm really happy with the product and Oneida is great to deal with. If I had a little more cash at the time I would have gone for a 3 HP. Like Todd says, 6" mains would be money well spent.

Darryl, if you got that DC cheap, and can put a 1-micron canister on it and still have paid less than a new Grizzly to do the same, then you got a bargain.

Chuck, Consider the Grizzly G0548 2 HP Canister Dust Collector for $475, if you have 220 volt, single phase power available.

The 6" PVC sewer pipe (available at Menards, in the US) for the main runs is not very expensive. You'll spend a lot more on the 6" to 4" connectors ("sanitary T") for each drop, and blast gates, and 4" flex hose, and connectors to go from 4" to the size each tool needs, and the small piece of 6" flex hose you'll need from the DC unit to the beginning of the PVC run. I suppose that's typical though - in all plumbing and ducting situations the connectors are almost always the most money in the project.

Mine is a 2 HP delta. It's outside, under a shed behind my shop.

Added: I'm a one man shop so I only use 1 tool at a time. I've got a "Dust Right" expandable hose from Rockler, and have quick connects on each tool. I've also got a nozzle for cleaning the floor.

I am machine dealer , and i recomend at least 2hp , and if you do choose to use pvc piping , MAKE SURE you ground it well , other wise you will get static electrictity and it WILL shock the &*#$% outa you . and also , get the canister top models with the micron filters u will be happier in the long run. I have designed and installed dust systems from 2 hp to 85 hp . DONT go cheap , you will regret it . There is some new stuff out that is *snap together piping* that was extremely easy to install , however it isnt cheap. If you have 500 sq ft and want to hook up all eq. even in a 1 man shop , go 2 hp minimum.

You're right Todd, this is the correct fitting and it is a Y (Wye), not a sanitary Tee. I got cornfused on my nomenclature. These are currently available for about $14 or $15 at Menards. If you have a Menards close by, and they don't have these, they can order them. I couldn't find them cheaper online.

I have the old Oneida collector, and it works like a champ.
My whole shop is ducted to it and there is plenty of suction at the end of every run. I used PVC at all Y's, 45's and 90's, and ran some stranded copper wire inside and spiraled outside between galvanized straight runs. Have had no problems for 12 years.

Update:
When I finally pulled the trigger and ordered the G0548 from Grizzly, I paid and was invoiced... then, while waiting for delivery, I noticed on the Grizzly website that a new model had come out, the G0548Z, which I understand to have a beefier impeller. Dadgummit! I thought (or something like that) They were even running a special and the newer, better unit was $20 less. Dadgummit! A day late, and $20 short - not to mention being irritated that they obviously must have fixed a design flaw, and I would not be getting the new one. I was irritated with Grizzly, but figured - that's life. There's always a new model coming out of everything manufactured, and sometimes you're just going to slightly miss.

I got notice that the unit had shipped, but only bothered to open it after a few more dadgummits. Hey, wait a minute, it says here a G0548Z was on its way to me, and when I checked my credit card statement, I saw that they charged me $20 less than I was expecting. They didn't have to do that, I had clearly ordered before the new model and its introductory special pricing was announced. But they did. Ain't that cool! WTG, Grizzly!

Oh, and I know that the CFM ratings on almost all dust collectors are overblown (so to speak), but this baby could suck the chrome off a trailer hitch.

Ducting (6" sewer - thin wall - PVC), five 45° elbows, five wyes, five blast gates, four 10-foot 4" flex hoses, three feet of 6" flex hose, copper wire, 220v plug - all for about $250. So, my small shop was about $950 for dust collection.

I've got the Oneida 2HP Super Dust Gorilla and I'm really happy with it. I like the fact that it uses a Baldor motor. It makes a huge difference in the air quality in the shop and, after 2 1/2 years I've only cleaned the filter once, that was about a month ago and it didn't really need it. Of course, I'm not running a production shop either.

As has already been said, don't forget to budget for the ductwork. I used mostly flex hose, metal pipe and fittings from Oneida. I also made up some fittings using pieces and parts from the local big box store.

Lee Valley has some nice metal blast gates available at a reasonable price.

Read the info on Bill Pentz's site and also check out Air Handling Systems http://www.airhand.com/designing.asp, they've got some good info on their site even though their products are quite expensive.

Get the best unit you can afford, you'll be glad you did.
