 Post subject: Preparing fan bracing

My first classical so bear with me. Does profiling the bottom of the fan braces to the dome help keep the shape? Or is it just a waist of time considering their size? Does it hurt? :? Clinton

Crich, I believe that most people, myself included, just spring the fan braces onto the top in the solera or radius dish. When the glue has dried and the go bars removed the braces have been laminated to the top and hold the dish shape. I use the 3mm deep, 7mm wide Torres style fans and they hold the dome just fine.

No need to profile the fan braces. Just spring them into the top, and it will hold the shape fine.

Here you go, just for fun, these are pictures of my top just after gluing and shaping the braces. You can see how it holds the shape. My top is both domed and arched to the outside edges, so it's a little exaggerated, but there is nothing holding the shape but the fan braces.

Cool. :D I guess I should prepare the height close to the final dimension so they spring easier. Thanks for the pictures Waddy. There's more little anomalies than I thought between steel and nylon string guitars. Clinton
