You can spread the CA with a piece of masking tape on your finger, too. I've used CA and West System epoxies and I like the look of the epoxies better.

The best case scenario is before any finish, other than shellac, is applied. Since it dries so fast, you can work an area, sand it back, then move on. The only down sides are the fumes and the gumming of the razor blades. Wear a mask and keep extra blades nearby (one for cleaning the working blades). Rounding the working blade as suggested by Rod is a key item. I try to do all of the sanding by hand to avoid excess sanding in areas that do not require it. Now, if I had the orbital ros, 3", I may use that.

Ken, do you shellac seal before the epoxy? Many coats?

Two coats usually does it for epoxy and then a wash coat, before any topcoat. I don't think most epoxies adhere well to shellac, but shellac adheres well to epoxy. The medium CA is usually two coats also, except for woods like wenge. ;)
