A friend and guitar customer of mine also runs the gondola at Gore Mt.ski area.
This is a state owned & operated place.

He told me that around 10 years ago when they were cutting a few new trails down the mountain they came upon some old growth red spruce trees!
The best one had no twist ,no branches for over 20 feet and was over 5 feet across!
Well the state decided to dig a trench and bury these logs!!!
Trying to sell them was to much of a pain for them!!!!!!!!
After all they'd have to keep them around for awhile, find buyers, get off thier lazy arses and do something!!!! gaah
So if you ever go skiing at Gore Mtn. in North Creek N.Y. -you'll be
gliding over some beautiful old tops !

true story!!
Todd Stock will like this one!

Let's go dig 'em up!!!!!
Maybe we will be lucky and it'll be like Kauri!!! And maybe we won't get caught doing it. I can see a skiier falling off into an 8' deep hole that wasn't there yesterday and saying "D$%n luthiers!!

A fortune lost by the uninformed!

Well Thankfully it was only red spruce and nothing good  !!

The sad part is that spruce does not resist rot very well. There will be nothing left of that log if it has been there for 10 years....too bad!

So Mikey! I saw Greenfield just over a week ago when I was out east. He says to say hi!

laughing6-hehe laughing6-hehe If so, I wonder if it had a good tap tone when he hit it. idunno

Yeah I was joking about digging it up. I know it's long gone by now. Kauri is still there because of the acidity of the tannins in the peat preserving the wood. Those pine like trees don't hold up well. Around here, if you cut a pine, it can't lie on the ground more than a week, because that blue fungus starts infiltrating the wood and the mill won't take 'em when they get that way (of course I'm talking about loblollies and all these other crappy pine trees they plant nowadays around here).
