This might be a dumb question but here goes.

I am begining to do the research for my first acoustic build and I have a question. I am looking for a wood for the back and sides that is figured, easy to work with and not too expensive, incase I mess it up. What woods should I consider? I like curly maple or quilted maple but I have never used it for acoustics, only solid body guitars so I don't know if it is easy to bend and what not. As always thanks for your input.

Travis buddy walnut is a great wood - it's beautiful, figured, available, and bends very easily.

All add that it is a great sounding wood too!

Walnut, Koa, Cocobolo (though some allergic to it) maple makes a great steel string, Taz blackwood, sapele. Lot of woods in what looking for. Check out Bob C (RC tonewoods) and Andrew Gribbles (Hibdon hardwoods) Bob has a lot of differing woods in catagory looking for. Andrew sells great Cocobolo, which is my main wood for building now.

Oregon myrtle is a good option. Beautiful figure, not too expensive, very easy to bend, and some say it is similar to maple in its acoustic properties. I believe LMI usually has some in stock.

This is silver oak, very inexpensive with a great grain and I thought it was easy to work with. Allied has it on their web site.
