Ok, here is my solution, second attempt. I am using foam blocks for hold downs, and it blocks the chips, plexi glass over the planer, vacume hose (needs to be on side, but it works very very good!) Chip dust issue is 93% done, you get some dust when it pops out the other side.

My main issue is swirl marks, I am thinking better hold downs, smoother non -stop transition through the planer? That kind of kills the whole reason to get one of these. Obviously this needs to be adjustable for large stock, but the basics are there I believe.

I just watched the Little Dipper I bought last weekend for Hide Glue walk out the door with my wife to go to a Halloween party.

That looks like a good approach to the safety planer. I may rig something like that up once I get a drill press that can handle the Safety Planer.

By the way good concussion on the swirl marks are caused by 3 major issues. First and most likely is oscillation of the plate as it passes though the cutter. Next is chips getting in the path that alter microscopically the relation to the cutters and the plate. Lastly is the axis relationship between the cutter s and the plate.

Oh and don’t tell my wife that my first free hand drum sander was made from the rolling pin she lost.

I am looking at ball bearnings, sets of 2, in case the sides curl, they seem to do this a bit. The holes are 8MM, is there threadrod for this size hole? They seem to be standard skateboard ball bearings.

Frei this is the first time I have seen what you came up with for dust collection - very cool!

I've only done a few now, but I've been able to minimize the swirling by being very, very anal about getting the base truly perpendicular to the rotating axis of the planer. This means getting a good selection of brass shimming material from the hardware store and spending a little time with the setup. I use the Safe-T-Planer to come close and then finish with a scraper anyway -- the last 5 to 7 thou.
