Anybody try this in place of Z-poxy? Is it really clear?

I've been using it for years !!
I love it!

Do NOT apply it to bare wood-it really can make the grain swell.
I srpay a coat of shellac -then when dry apply the clear filler-it really lets your woods look natural!
Sand back to the wood-re-spray the shellac and do your final finish!
Some woods need 2 coats -or a heavy first one!

The great thing about this stuff is it dryes absolutely clear!
you can use it to fill dings & such !
Easier to work with than CA !!

I don't like it either. I live near San Francisco so very warm but not hot and it seems to dry very very fast no working time at all. I like epoxy better too.

Colortone clear? Sounds oxymoronic to me. I would be very shy of it if it is water based.

When all else fails, clean the shop.

I hate it too but it is indeed clear - you can tell by all the clear goop that clogs up your sand paper when it all sands out of the pores - over and over again.....

Seriously I had very bad luck with the stuff, both the clear and with stain variety..... When I switched to epoxy finishing resin the experience was MUCH better immediately.

Also remember when tonking the can shut to cover the can with a towel or else any filler in the lip of the can will explode onto your walls....... When I was building in my bathroom and using the Colortone with brown stain in it this happened....... Not easy to explain to guests..........

Z-Poxy, pumice, CA, egg white and Colortone Clear Grain Filler are all alternative pore fillers with pros and cons for each. What is a newbie to use?

It sounds like: "don't use what doesn't work for you and use what does." In other words, experiment and see?

I only used it once on one guitar and I had good results with it. I always use a scraper rather than sand paper so maybe that is the trick to it. The wood I used it on was Lacewood which is terribly porous so it took many many coats just to fill the grain and it came out quite nice. here is an image though it probably doesn't show it's clarity. I always put a primer top coat on before the filler too.



I'd like to learn more about the epoxy fillers you all speak about.
