Had a twenty year old 410 on the bench. No I’m not an authorized Taylor service center. But I took the neck off since the owner asked me to. Holy cow was that simple. Three bolts, 5 minutes. I’m going to look seriously at getting away from dovetails on my neck builds. |

The problem for you not being an Authorized Taylor Repair person is that you can't get the little laser cut shims to properly do the neck set (and actiom adjustment). Even tho I could, in theory make them myself I send every Taylor to someone with the shims. I have also learned that every time I see a member of the A&L family (Seagull, Art & Lutherie, Godin) I just automatically check the neck bolts - I have seen three guitars that looked like they needed a neck reset but it was only loose bolts (doing the actual reset on an A&L is somewhat more difficult than a Taylor. And last, but far from least, I have been doing bolted M&T necks for a long time now - there is certainly a place for dovetails but a couple of bolts and inserts is a whole lot easier. |

They happily sold me a tech shim kit, and I need them for pretty near every Taylor coming in the shop! Asked me if I was interested in becoming “authorized”, but I declined — not part of my business plan. The Taylor shim system is indeed a dream to use, which is a good thing, as the guitars suffer from frequent changes in neck angle. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Living here in the eastern townships of Quebec where Godin does its thing, I see a ton of these guitars. Their bolt-on system has been around for quite a while, but what has changed is the material used for the neck block. Older Godins have a mahogany block, while more recent guitars have a laminated thing with light-coloured woods. The mahogany blocks are very stable, the newer laminated ones definitely are not. I’ve done a pile of neck angle adjustments on the Godin lines, but I don’t recall ever doing one on one with a mahogany neck block. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I think you can even get those shims at Stewmac now. I've made a few myself, pretty simple to do. |
