I seem to recall a thread about buying sheets of PTFE and sawing one's own glue strips. I'm interested in trying this but the prices on teflon sheets are a little startling. Anyone have any leads on cheaper alternatives. I'm interested in something either 1/8" thick or 1/4" thick.

I see what you mean. Here's the results of a couple of searches, looks like it's about $30/ board foot for HDPE. https://www.tapplastics.com/product/pla ... boards/346. 1/2" 3/4" or 1" from Tap.
Or a 1/2" cutting board at walmart, https://www.walmart.com/ip/BRADSHAW-INT ... d/14938510.
Woodcraft also has UHMW sheets 1/8" to 3/4". https://www.woodcraft.com/products/uhmw-sheet-1-8-thick.
I've cut up old cutting boards before that my wife had me replace with bamboo ones :) .

Thanks for your help. I'm not familiar with the characteristics of HDPE or UHMW, are those impervious to glue like HDPE (teflon)?

If I got the cut surfaces of the cutting boards smooth, it didn't stick. If in doubt, call the seller and ask.

McMaster-Carr has them. https://www.mcmaster.com/ptfe
I've done this before for fret slots when gluing on binding.
