Hey Steve! I can only speculate but this thing has a Koa veneer top and they may have been worried about the bridge pulling up the veneer when it failed..... kind of like a window shade..... Opps..... I hate when that happens and your koa topped ax sheds it's skin like a snake in spring..... (or fall.... never had the opportunity to ask a snake when they do this...).

The depth is deep enough that they cut well into the spruce sub top fibers too. Oh well, no one brings us stuff because everything is hunky dory.... ;)

Don't get me wrong I'm a Godin and wholly owned brands fan who often recommends Seagulls to folks as inexpensive, North American made axes made by a company that pays a living wage.

Anyway fill that sucker with water and go swimming....;)
