And I ain't talking V-Dubs....

Flying V's, Randy Rhoads V's, King V's.... I hate working on them. Lay them on the bench, and when I go to pick up the neck for a measurement the nearest point slides to me and right off the bench. Every stinking time. I have to turn the darn thing at right angles to the bench to check action at the nut.

THEN.... When it comes time to play the darn thing, you can't put it in your lap. Putting the farthest leg between your knees won't work, either. Must get a strap. It's a pain. I wanna reach back in time and smack Ted McCarty or whoever for designing such a POS shape, and NOT actually handing one to see what it does in the real world.

Have I told you I hated working on V's?

I can relate, what a stupid design.....

About ten years ago a family in the area brought in an old G*bson case to the store that used to be located where we are. Turns out that this was their Dad's guitar that even though he didn't play it had been given to him as payment when the G*bson factory contracted him to do electrical work on the facility and then had no money to pay the bill. So they gave this guy a Flying V and he put it under his bed for 50 years or so and never touched it.

It was serial number 001P or the first prototype of the V. It was initially listed for $100,000 but sat around for 6 mouths at that price. It eventually sold for $65K which is still a pretty hefty price for a guitar that can't be played without a strap...

I was thinking about digging up Leo yesterday and shooting him for his truss rod access originally requiring loosening the neck bolts. Chris if you want any help digging up the designer of the V and shooting him too let me know bro. :)

I've never had any desire to own one, but I did get to see Lonnie Mack play a tiny club between Ann Arbor and Detroit (possibly in Dearborn) in the early 90s. He defintely pulled it off.

I've never owned or held one but I imagined them to be that way but I still want one, you know, because they look awesome.

I made one. Looks cool, but I cannot play it sitting down.

I made a couple Explorers too. They sit perfectly on the leg while sitting. Only problem is you can't set it up against anything because of the curved bottom and a case for it is monster-sized.

Last year I got to install a Sustainiac in a Vee. It already had a active pickup so it ends up with two batteries, the pcb and all the other electronic crap and the driver thing in the neck position

If the battery dies in the middle of a gig you are toast so I put a little volt meter and rocker switch in the compartment so you can easily check them

Yeah but you know what? With a strap they are some of the most comfortable guitars to play imho.

Maybe someone some day will invent a Patented Flying Vee leg rest... You can make a fortune kid.
