I have an early 70's J-50 in the shop for some major work. One of the issues is the crumbling tortoise celluloid binding. Removing this with mild heat and a sharp chisel seems straight forward, but I have a question about gluing in the new bindings. All the glues I've seen recommended for celluloid will damage the lacquer finish. Anyone with experience on this kind of repair have suggestions for how to glue the new bindings tightly without getting any glue squeeze-out? Mask off the lacquer, use very light glue, etc? Thanks for any help.

You can tape the bindings in place and carefully run in some thin viscosity cyanoacrylate to glue them. Even with care there will inevitably be a bit on the finish, but the big deal will be to level the bindings neatly and doing the necessary finish work. At best, I figure on the job taking long enough that I'd have to charge more than the guitar would be worth after restoration, so, it's a job I decline.
