I think it looks great, too. Very nice work. What is the small control know (seems to be without a nut around the shaft) that's just in line with the tailpiece pivot?

That knob moves back and fort and has a steel bar that lifts the string dampener right behind the bridge pickup . Was a poor design and doesn't work worth a crap.

Look closely between the bridge and bridge pickup.

Great job! One to be proud of for sure.

I just completed work on an old Gibson J50 that included replacing the crumbling nitrocellulose tortoise binding, and it was a nightmare. I was advised not to take on the job but I had already done $500 work of work on the guitar to restore playability, and that had gone very well. I needed the $$ and decided to do the binding work after the customer agreed to pay well for it.

The binding was crumbling but was still very firmly glued in place, and the guitar has a thick poly finish that proved to have poor adhesion. Despite using enough heat to almost melt the old binding, scribing all the edges deeply, and going very slowly, the removal did serious damage to the finish in numerous places. Lots of finish lifting and pulling of wood fibers.

I managed to install new bindings and purflings that look pretty good, all things considered. Lots of touch-ups of course. The owner was happy with the job and even more pleased with the playability and tone, as the guitar was unplayable when he brought it to me. I gave him a substantial discount off of the binding price due to the difficulties that affected the final appearance.

I will NEVER accept another binding replacement of this type again. It looks like the binding came off of your CG much easier/cleaner. And I did do a similar tortoise binding replacement on another old Gibson last year that had almost no finish on it, and the old binding practically fell off. So I guess it is a case by case decision. Really nice work you did, from someone who knows the pain!

Back in the early 80's I replaced the binding on a 40's Gretsch Sychromatic that was left in the basement under a leaky pipe. The whole guitar was coming apart by the time I got it on my bench. Total replane of fretboard, and refret. The soundboard and back were loose, and the binding just cracked and fell off in pieces. Put new gold Imperials on it while I was at it.

What an education that was!

I charged the customer $1,180.00 for this restore . And quite frankly , I would NOT do it again for that . I guess for me this was the "biggest" job iv'e taken on to date and the way it turned out has me stoked . So while it was worth more as a $ job . The lessons and Training were worth it .

Great job on this guitar! I am so awate of Gretsch's crumbling binding. I did one several years ago. An education by itself. And, I have two 67/68 Country Gentleman of my own that I need to get started on. But when?

Tom

Nice job! I had no idea there is a giant hole underneath the odd barstool cover they put on the back of those guitars. Is that for electronics access?
