That's for sure - especially when it's time to fret it. But that one sure looks nice!

Well I had to bite the bullet and do some inlay gaah
Got the dovetail all fitted up and need to glue the fingerboard to the neck & finish carving.

Thanks for looking guys, Jason I've carved necks out of Walnut, Honduras Mahogany, Khaya, and Maple is the easiest to carve.

I had a minor setback while gluing on the fingerboard, it slipped and kind of messed it up, so were doing another.

Fingerboard #2 is ready to inlay some pearl, I'm considering going with pearl dots instead of the Nick Lucas inlays I have, I dunno I still have plaety of time. I also have a White Oak Herringbone dread coming along built to 1937 prewar specs with 28 style appointments. Slotted several fingerboards, the amazonian I got from my dad, the macassar I scored locally, and the ebony is one of Andy Birko's sweet CNC faux bound numbers:)

Really been busy around here, but finally got fingerboard #2 inlayed. Our own Dave Ball "Ball Banjo's" gave me some tips on inlay and it went better this time.
Get your layout situated and spot glue your inlays in place, scribe a nice tight line and use chalk to highlight.
Now radius the fretboard and glue on the neck, (without slippage) & don't forget the side dots.......

Ummmm.....I don't do the side dots like that. My method has MUCH less machinery involved.....

Well?

Fretboard & bridge are Amazonian rosewood so I decided to use same for the end graft. Getting very close to finish time.

Going to take a week off, going to Gwynn's Island Virginia for week on the beach with the kids, grandson, stray niece & nephew, & the wife:)

Time to fess up and resume this build. I was really happy with my fretboard & inlay, glued it to the neck and the dang thing was too narrow gaah did not cover the dovetail laughing6-hehe it was wide enough for a Strat or Tele but way too short duh. So I just put it aside for about a month or two. It was really close to being firestarter

I was able to salvage most of the pearl. Made some fretboard templates and another fretboard, inlayed the abused pearl (actually cut two pieces out of blank stock) carved another neck, fit the dovetail, carved a pretty snazzy birds beak volute and here we are. I have some pearl to inlay on the headstock and we should start the sunburst/finish next week.

I'm pulling out of the challenge. I was attempting a hand applied vintage "burst" and its not exactly what I had in mind. This particular guitar has been a challenge every step of the way, but I've learned quite a bit and am a better builder for it. It will get finished and played, but it will never be a showpiece. Good luck to all the participants.

Thats the problem its not a burst gaah [uncle] It has two good coats of nitro lacquer on at the moment, it will have a quick and dirty finish, very thin....... and we will set it up and give it a good workout, I may post a pic eventually. duh

On the go figure end of things my wife and 13 year old daughter love it :mrgreen:

Sorry to hear about the finish... Can't you strip it off and try and save?

I did notice you had your side dots nicely centred, but would these no longer be centred after the fingerboard is profiled?

It's a question as it's obviously easier and more accurate doing it at that stage, than when attached to neck and with a taper and radius etc... When do others do this and what method for ensuring centred dots (top to bottom) after fretboard radius is applied ?

You might want to retry the finish. I've spent my shop time for the last two weeks (admittedly limited) taking the finish off of my size O project. Got it back to bare wood but sanded through one of the purling lines on the rosette. I'll be fixing the rosette today and then refinishing. A lot of work but glad I did it. Worth consideration.

Thanks, no stripping and its kind of growing on me duh I just want to get it strung up and play it for a while.
