Nothing for a few days. I need to learn to play something on the ukulele so I can make a recording. I have taken decent pics, but I am waiting until I can post a recording to post those. But as a teaser, here is one: Not too shabby. But there is a flaw. Not in this pic so much, but in the ones I have yet to post. |

I better post pics before I forget. Here you go: So there you have it. The heel is a little chunky, but I drilled my bolt hole too deep, so I had to leave it a little thick so I didn't sand through. The finish could be better, but I am not horrified by it. Had I known we were going to have more time, I would not have rushed the finish, but that's ok. It is for a relative, I made it with scrap, and it still looks OK. I have to go back and find the last total I did so I can add the tuners. I had free ones that showed up in the mail, but I foolishly made the head stock without measuring the tuners posts. Turns out, they needed a much thinner head stock. So I used tuners I had laying around that came with my first kit but that I never used. They are the "budget" tuners from Stew Mac so I need to add that into the price. Thanks for looking! Tony |

Tony_in_NYC wrote: Edited to add to my total: I was at $54.54, add on the $1.25 for my not-quite-free-burl and I am now at: $55.79. I am probably going to buy a rattle can of nitro or two to finish the box. Faster than brushing because it will dry quicker. I hope. Found this several pages back. I did not find a post I thought I made adding in the lacquer, so here are the final numbers: $55.79 (previous total) $7.00 Can of Deft lacquer from Lowes Call is $5.00 worth of lacquer for the neck from a gallon of Deft. Only took a few ounces to finish it, if that. $4.00 worth of Z-Poxy to pore fill $13.89 for tuners ($20.89 for a set of budget tuners from Stew Mac, I used 66.67% of the tuners) Grand total: $85.68. I did not take into account the cost of the replacement top, but if memory serves, I was told not to. However, the wood was cheap, so I would still be under budget if I had to account for it. I suppose there is nothing left but the voting for this little guy. And if I can, I will make a video. Still have not had time to play it enough to actually make a song sound like a song though. Between the hurricane and putting my cat to sleep last wee, I just did not make the time. I don't expect to win the chisel. I entered this build off because my cousin had been bugging me to build her an ukulele for two years and I never made the time to do it. This competition gave me the push to do so, and for that, I am thankful. Plus, it was nice to interact with some forum members with whom I don't often interact with. So it's a win/win/win in my book. Even if I don't get to make a video. That's all for now. Tony |

Well, Tony, that's still the biggest, most gargantuan sound hole I've ever seen on a tiny uke, and I keep coming back and looking at it and it doesn't seem to get any smaller. But, you know what? I LIKE it! Actually, I think it's a pretty cool little instrument. Patrick |

Thanks Patrick! Is the hole big? I didn't have plans to go from so I had to wing it. How big should the hole be on a concert uke? Posted using letters to form words, sentences and thoughts. |

What you are looking at is another Costa trademark - you've heard of Helmholtz Resonance? Well this is Heelhole Resonance^TM. You see, Costa has a special formula which determines the mass and resonant frequency of the heel and produces the optimal soundhole size to maximize projection. Filippo Besides , If it doesnt work . You can always pour some Costa Kerfing in it to help reduce the sound hole ! |

Well I'll be the one to say it. The soundhole size is an added safety measure; it is just lightly larger than Tony's (tiny if you know what I mean) fist. The next time he and his Uke get I to a drunken shouting match he can let her have it without having to re-top her. |
