Gorgeous! Definitely no burst if it was me. It looks so pure and clean like that, and the world has enough sunbursted maple things already.

Why bother with z-poxy when building entirely from poreless woods? Just to pop the figure better than spraying nitro directly? Seems like a lot of trouble compared to giving it a wipe of shellac or something. But it certainly does look nice the way it is :)

That is some really pretty figure....shame to cover any of it up or distract from it with a burst. On the other hand, in YOUR hands, I know they'll look great either way. Maybe do one burst and one natural? Even "identical" twins aren't really identical.

Beth - you have to finish up that workshop and start building again...this vicarious luthier thing has got to be hard! When you find yourself jonesing for just one more pic of curly maple, it's time to get something on the bench...whatever the state of your shop space.

You are SO right! The shop lockset goes on and the pegboard goes up tomorrow. A few last details, and I'm ready to rock. Meanwhile, I sure am enjoying the builds you guys are doing.

They're both beautiful, but my eyes prefer the more gentle color graduations of the instrument on the right side of the photos. I also prefer the more rounded shape of the sunburst shadow near the neck joint on the same instrument. This means nothing beyond my personal preference. For everyone out here like me, there will be another who prefers the graduations on the left instrument. Cool work, guys, and a nice thread, too. Lots of "how-to" info included in your posts. I'm sure a lot of builders have picked up on that. I'll assure you that I have. Keep them coming, and let us see them strung up. Congrats to both of you!

Nice bursts. I like 'em both. Giving some soft amber color to the bindings will be just right. The sunburst archtops that use white bindings and add no color don't look right to me.

OK, I'll just come out and say it.... You guys are sick. Wicked talented, you two.

L-5s? Yes, indeed! I would love to see that. As I have stated here many times, nothing does it for me like a beautiful archtop guitar. I think the L-5 is a high enough standard to inspire any builder and I would love to see you guys go for a pair of them!

Those are really nice looking instruments and I've enjoyed following your thread. I'm looking forward to hearing what they sound like. I've got Benedetto's archtop book and some nice maple from James Condino so someday I'll have to give some kind of archtop a go.

Hey guys,
Beautiful work! I'm a bit confused though. Are you guys entering the contest as one, or two contestants? Doesn't really matter to me, just wondering how the poll should be set up.

A terrific collaboration guys, and outstanding results! I particularly like the 2x4's contribution! (With each page taking about 10 minutes to load on my dialup, I've waited 'til I saw "done" to check it out)
Well done [:Y:]

I think #1 has a bit of a brighter voice than #2 but they both sound great! Makes me wish I could play one.

Wow you guys they both sound great. Did you record with compression or do those instruments have a natural compression to them? They really hold volume and sustain between notes really well. I have never seen such an instrument before and they sound really cool. Is it tuned just like a mando in 5ths too?

I gotta have one now :D

ah ok hence why they call them octave mandolin. I'd love to hear some other recordings those sound great and I am intrigued. Good job.
