Wud
Replace the side walls of your banjo resonator with a block rim and bolt the neck to it either with furniture knock down bolts

or lag screws and nuts.

(shameless self promotion here!) I make block rims for banjos and I could make what you need inexpensively.

In the meantime (since that would probably not get done in the next week) what about just sandwiching the rim between the neck and a block and bolting it together that way? And then if there is too much flex the stick between the neck and tail blocks could fix that - or a trunnion bolt could be used that would allow some adjustment?

The next one I build will be a solid wood rim min 3/16" probably stop at 1/4" , when the top and back are in place there is no give , you have two solid circles and as everyone knows a circle can hold great loads .

Had I done this with a Mandolin neck and strings I believe it would have held fine . However the .054 " mandola set apply a huge amount of tension.

Minor set back ..... I will be re-gluing and bolting most of it back together today .

Neck Re Bolted and Re-Glued . :Letting the glue dry . I have Carbon Fiber rod installed . If necessary I can run a threaded rod into the neck in place of the bolt and run it all the way into the tail block .

Going back with reversed kerf linings for a guitar . I think tis will help a little on the side stiffness over Mandolin Linings .. I can already feel a difference in the weight of the Mandola

Im gonna leave the finish undone and string it up . If all holds and she plays I will have finish work to do after the first .

Out for sure now , Strung the second time and got closer to tuned but the neck started cantilevering over , I checked the joint and it was holding . Started checking the shape of the body and the entire body is deforming going egg shaped . This resonater just doesn't have the strength to hold together under that stress . I will be constructing a new body from solid wood for this one .

Even though I didn't get it fully tuned , it did have some great ring and sustain . I do believe there is merit to this Idea ... Just some "back to the drawing board " time .

I look forward to seeing and hearing all the finished entries [clap]

Still Plugging along here guys . Ordered 2 sets of tenor guitar strings . That will make the 4th set .040 instead of .054 , With additional bracing I should be in Business .

I had to spray the top to blend in . After having that sucker off twice , there are areas I need to hide laughing6-hehe

This sucker is gonna play if I have to send it to Tony for another beatin ! laughing6-hehe

Post subject:  Re: Wud's Build FINISHED , well , 99.9% anyway

Got it finished and re-strung and tuned . I went with tenor guitar strings that helped a bunch . The 4th wet from .054 to .040 , reduced the stress alot . It is tuned and the neck is holding , I am at .120 at 12th fret , I will work it down to .090 . ( requires sanding the bridge down a little , saddle is as far as I can go ) Needs some drop fill laq and a bit more satin finishing in spots but all in all its good.

Hey Wud,
I still haven't heard from Lance (and I did email him too), so you can still get in at the vote. :)

Thanks Wud, but the production value was WAY down! iPhone video was not my first choice but I had no other options. Can't seem to find the video camera. I am beginning to think that it left with my old cleaning lady who suddenly vanished. But, at least I got the video up. Thanks for the compliments on the sound of the little uke. The secret is in the big sound hole. It is NOT the sound hole itself, but what is IN it!
