So I've decided to build a black walnut/? 000-12 fret. The walnut is an ugly flat sawn set I bought for under $5. I'm not sure what to do for the top, I'm thinking maybe an unbookmatched adirondack top. For the neck I'm going to use maple, for the fingerboard and bridge I want to use persimmon (if I can find some). Here's all I have done so far.

There is nothing ugly about that walnut. Did you join the back without tape or anything? |

Nah, its pretty ugly. I'm using the tape method, but the tape is on the other side of the back. This was the first back I have joined with my new veritas low angle smoothing plane and wow, what a difference. I didn't even need to sand the joint before gluing (btw, I used fish glue) |

florentin, Almost any hardwood dealer will have stuff like this fairly cheap. It might not be in guitar set form. |

There's no such thing as ugly walnut. The side set (what I can see of it) looks very nice, too. Your flat sawn set will be slightly more prone to expansion and contraction along its width than quarter sawn material, so be sure you do your cross grain gluing when the shop humidity is right. ...and if it were mine, I'd save the maple for another project and scrounge some more walnut for the neck. Well I had a change of plans. I've decided to make a Pine/Walnut 0-14 fret instead of a 000-12 fret. This pine isn't just any pine though, I got it from Tom Theil, who got it from a really old carriage factory. This pine is many hundreds of years old, and Tom said Al Carruth had tested this wood and it's stiffness was comparable to some of the stiffer spruces he's tested. It has a great ring and should make a nice guitar.
