It's been years since I posted any of my instruments here, but now that there is so much more interest in Ukes I though I might as well show some of my work. This one is made from some veneers sliced from a single large billet I had shipped from Washington. The figure changed from that deep quilt to more of a ribbon curl across the board, and I thought that it would be appropriate for a sound board. Cut quite a few sets from the one billet. It's some quite dark Maple paired up with East Indian Rosewood. Koa in the rosette and Pau for the shell highlights. The figure in the quilting is so deep it looks like you could stick your finger into it. The photos really don't do it justice. That's a beautiful ukulele, Allen. The wood figure and the ornamentation are obviously very special and they're beautifully executed. The thing that REALLY strikes me is the fairness of the body shape. I think the entire instrument is outstanding. I'm curious about your thoughts on the outcome, using maple for the instrument. Do you feel that maple adds any particular nuance to the tone (brightness, perhaps?). Congratulations on a real beauty. |

This particular maple is very hard and dense. It's tonal response is quite a bit warmer than some other lighter and tight curl maple ukes I've built. |

That's a beautiful rosette! I'm always impressed by that sort of rosette, and wonder if there is some secret formula to their construction, or whether they all just look good because the concept is just so cool. |

The rosettes are actually a real challenge to do well. Besides all the mitring, getting the proportions right to give a feeling of movement is something that takes a bit of time with pencil to paper before you ever cut into a soundboard. |

Stunning!!!! Beautiful work!! The rosette is awesome!!! I have a quilted maple set I want to start a uke build with soon. I've heard it can be very difficult to bend? Any tips? |
