G'day all. Not posted anything here for some time and see that there is a area for non guitar related instruments, so this just might fit in here. As the title says its a Baritone Uke from Australian Blackwood with an Engelman spruce top. Fret board, bridge and peg head veneers are some stripy ebony. Neck of Spanish Cedar, and bindings are what is referred to as Silver Ash here. Could be any sort of Eucalypt though and I can't say for sure. Scale length is 20" and has a 12" radius on the fret board. Finish is lacquer over a WEST Systems pore fill. Thanks guys. I don't often check things out here. Spend most of my time on the ANZLF and the Ukulele Underground. Will make a point of checking in and posting a bit more often. |

Allen, I think it's fabulous. Quite beautiful, and I am glad you shared it with us. If I could offer one creative, positive criticism, it would be to space the two "outside" tuning machines (closest to the nut) a little wider on your next uke, so that you don't have any strings rubbing against other strings and posts as they go along their path to the higher tuners. I am not talking down to you. I came within a whisker of having the same problem on my archtop guitar a few years ago. I have already carried the lesson learned forward into two mandolins and a banjo. When I get around to my next guitar, I will adjust my headstock template to correct that problem. But all this is a relatively small matter. I think you've built a beautiful instrument. Kind regards, Patrick |

This is a new headstock shape for me, and you are right, it's just a little tight on those two lower posts. I've got 2 more in the works that will have the modification. I build almost all of my ukes with a 12" radius on the fret board. Soprano's are flat, but everything else gets a radius unless specified otherwise. Most of my work is custom builds and it's what the clients ask for. Anything less than 12" is just a waste of time and effort on a uke though. The fret boards are so narrow that you won't notice it otherwise. And it really does help in playability. I regularly pass my instruments around to professional players for a critique. A radius on the fret board always gets the thumbs up. |
