I'm working out the details of my first mandolin, which is going to be built in a simple Army-Navy style. I've found enough reference material to put together some basic plans, but I'm not sure about the angle of the headstock. Is 15 degrees the correct headstock angle for this type of instrument?

It appears that 1 to 2 1/2 degrees is the range used.

Thanks for your reply. That thread has some very useful information, but right now I'm looking for insight into the angle of the headstock, not the neck. (Although it's great to have confirmation of that measurement as well!) I've been quietly browsing the Mandolin Cafe for the past couple of weeks--lots of great info over there. Looks like another nice group of people, too.

Doh! duh

From the looks of it here, Terry over at Crystal Mountain is using 16.5 at the headstock and 3.5 neck angle.

15deg is pretty typical for peg head tuners. If you're worried the best way is to draw out the head stock from the front and side views....including the tuners. You can see if any strings overlap.

Something else I have learned form experience. When you are drawing up the peghead design and determining the angle on short thin instruments, it is a good idea to draw it out with the whole neck and body too. I ended up with an instrument that rested on the tail and tuning key knob when laid on its back.
