I am doing the finish in tru oil - I put two thin coats on the fretboard, wiped all the excess off each time and then I realized that it is leaving this really weird streaking/staining on the fretboard? I'm thinking maybe the oil seeped into the frets and pulled something out from in there? Does anyone know what might have caused this? Would this be a screwup on the kit builders' end? Is it something that can/should be fixed? Any help would be appreciated. |

What's interesting is that the stains look like they originate at the location of the fret barbs. Could just be extra Tru-Oil that soaked into the end-grain of the fretboard that is exposed on both sides of each fret slot. Give it at least 48 hours to see if it will dry. Also, could be residual oil that was on the fretwire. The Tru-Oil could have dissolved it which would allow it seep into the fretboard. I try to remember to clean fretwire with a solvent dampened rag to remove residual oil before setting them. |

Is it something that can/should be fixed? Any help would be appreciated. Welcome Sean - I concur with Barry it's telegraphing the fret barbs and may be fret wire related. Who's kit, manufacturer is this and where did you get it from. It may be a screw-up on the part of the kit manufacturer and that fret wire sure is suspect here. True Oil has been used a lot by hobby builders and this is a new one that I've never seen or heard of before. I would be interested to know who's fret wire they use and what glue they use to glue the frets in too. Let us know where you got the kit and maybe you are due a replacement neck. Oh yeah, was the neck already fretted when you got it and does it say anything on it? |
