I am building a Firebird style guitar. I have the body and neck completed and I'm ready to start finding the hardware/electronics. I know the rule is don't drill your headstock until you have your tuning machines in hand and now I know why. 6 mos. ago when I started, the Steinberger Gearless Tuners were widely available but were 100 bucks so I was putting off purchasing them. Now they aren't available to the public except for some on Ebay that are fetching almost $200.
I drilled the headstock across the face so there is no way I can use regular tuners. I'm considering Waverly banjo tuners. Stew Mac will sell me them individually so I can get just 6.
My question is has anyone used banjo tuners on a guitar? I don't see why it wouldn't work but I thought someone here might have some suggestions.

Banjo tuners may be a little fast in their gearing for guitar use regardless of the history with the Firebirds. Arn't quality banjo tuners 4 : 1 in ratio which is way faster and less precise than guitar tuners. Just a thought.
