Howdy all. Building a 12 electric neck through Maple/mahogany neck I will be using Hot Rod truss from Stewmac (http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Truss_rods/Adjustable_truss_rods/Hot_Rod_Truss_Rods/1_4_Hex_Nut_Hot_Rod.html)
Will I need additional reinforcement from either carbon fiber rods or double rod it (being a cheaper alternative)?

In my opinion, this standart trussrod will do it. The 6 additionnal string have small gauges, so they don't pull the neck that much ( 12 strings is not double tension of 6...). I think a simple truss rod is enough to resist the tension. Maybe you could take some assurance by doing a stiffer neck (with some harder wood laminates), and, obviously, with a really well quartered neck, that will be more stable (I didn't say stronger, don't start the debate again!)

My two cents!

By the way, I love 12 stringed electric, you have more details on you project?

Francis

Haha yeah I have details sort of a frankenstien build.

Chambered body with neck through. Narra (asian rosewood), maple back, spruce top. Maple/African Mohagony laminate neck rosewood fb. Thinking LP scale. I'm debating on the satriani pickups I like em very versitile sound but unsure on feedback with a chambered. I'll get some pics going here soon.

When I built my electric 12, I duplicated the dimensions of my Takamine 12-string acoustic (nut width and back profile) but made up the neck blank of quarter-sawn maple with Bolivian rosewood accent stripes. It's a 24-fret neck. I used a double-action truss rod from W D Music. No additional reinforcements, and the neck has been stable for 5 years. After the initial setup, I've never touched the truss rod.

Thanks for reply Steve.

I have decided to go with the hot rods and considered I am using good quater sawn maple.
Will try to get pictures posted of progress but I just get so absorbed in the work I sort of forget.
As far as neck since I have the bridge and black tusq nut I based my neck dimensions on that.

Though here's a pic of me with my brother-in-law and nephew dragging a white spruce for some future guitars.
