On my 1957 D-18 the frets seem shorter than the wire I used on my first guitar kit build, an OM. What size and type of fret wire would have been used by Martin in 1957?

I would at least ask in the Acoustic guitar subforum, not the kits. You might also call Martin or PM someone like John Hall at Blues Creek or Bryan Kimsey. The tech forum at UMGF is pretty active.

Kimsey refretted my 74 D-18, whatever he used is perfect.

What John said.

There was a time when most wire was pretty small compared to the speed bumps that are available today. I personally like .037 X .080 and prefer it over jumbo wire greatly.
